SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL PROJECT

The City of San Fernando has been awarded over $3 million in State and Federal funds for pedestrian safety improvements at various public and private schools throughout the city. The purpose of these improvements is to make street crossings and other locations safer for children as they walk to school. These improvements include the installation of "bulb outs," striping and signage.

Sand bags are temporarily being placed at the affected intersections to show the location of the bulb outs and to give pedestrians and motorists a sense of how the improvements will impact this intersection. The affected intersections include:

  • Eighth Street and Harding Avenue
  • Eighth Street and Fermont Street
  • Eighth Street and Orange Grove Avenue
  • Eighth Street and Lazard Street
  • Eighth Street and Leach Street
  • Glenoaks Boulevard and Harding Street
  • Glenoaks Boulevard and Alexander Street
  • Glenoaks Boulevard and Brand Boulevard
  • South Maclay Avenue and Kewen Street
  • South Maclay Avenue and Coronel Street

The project is expected to commence in the first half of 2013.

The city welcomes any comments you may have about this project to better ensure that the project is successful and accepted by the community. You may provide your comments by contacting the City of San Fernando Public Works Department at 818-898-1222 or by e-mail at saferoutestoschool@sfcity.org.

Project Updates:

After further analysis of the project and input from community members, the “islands” in the middle of the street will not be included in the project. In addition, the number of intersections with “bulb-outs” has been reduced. This changes will better ensure that larger vehicles such as refuse trucks, street sweepers, fire trucks, etc., will be able to maneuver through the intersections. A specific list of changes is forthcoming and will be posted on this website.
